The Mars Volta's most recent album, Amputechture, is possibly the one most fans dislike, but there is only one reason for that: it's so hard to get into. The biggest difference between Amputechture and its predecessors, is that Amputechture is not a conceptual album, but a collection of heavily varying sounds and emotions. I think this is wonderful, but it has one drawback: every song gets abruptly cut off in the end, to make room for the next one. If you can get over yourself though, you will, after some time, appreciate this album fully, especially songs such as Tetragrammaton, Meccamputechture, Day of the Baphomets, and the terribly moving "Asilos Magdalena." This album is another beautiful brainchild of The Mars Volta.
